Maili Malvre
The war took homeland along with the social position
Maili Malvre speaks about her parents who were successful people enjoying their life in the high society circles. Their apartment was situated in Kadriorg, Tallinn. Thanks to a hint given by one of their acquaintance, that their family must have been on the deportation list in June 1941, they left their home and started hiding in various places. During the German occupation they found a place in their uncle's farm. As the frontline was approaching Estonia once again, they decided to leave their homeland. The family left with one of the last German warships from Roomassaare and reached Germany. Malvre recalls their life in DP-camps in Germany which included sporadic spread of tuberculosis and typhus, which eventually took her mother’s life. Later Maili reached the USA.
